Lymph Drainage Therapy:
Lymph Drainage Therapy (LDT) is a hands-on method of lymphatic drainage. The benefits are as follows:
- Reduction in edemas (swelling) and lymphedemas of various origins
- Detoxification of the body
- Regeneration of tissue, including burns, wounds and wrinkles
- Anti-aging effects
- Relief of numerous chronic and subacute inflammations, including sinusitis, bronchitis and otitis
- Support the immune system
- Relief of chronic pain
- Reduction in the symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia
- Antispastic actions to relieve conditions such as muscle hypertonus and some forms of constipation
- Deep relaxation to aid insomnia, stress, loss of vitality and loss of memory
LDT enables practitioners to detect the specific rhythm, direction, depth and quality of the lymph flow anywhere in the body. From there they can use their hands to perform Manual Lymphatic Mapping (MLM) of the vessels to assess overall circulation and determine the best alternate pathways for draining body-fluid stagnations.
Therapists work with flat hands, using all the fingers to simulate gentle, specific wave-like movements. These subtle manual maneuvers activate lymph and interstitial fluid circulation as well as stimulate the functioning of the immune and parasympathetic nervous systems.
Lymphedema is caused by damage to the lymphatic system, and means that the lymph flow is disrupted and protein cells accumulate in the tissues, bringing about swelling. Although there is no known cure for this, the swelling can be very successfully managed with Complete Decongestive Therapy, and a normal lifestyle can often be restored. This non-invasive, painless and effective therapy has been used in Europe since the 1960s, and is now widely recognized in the United States.
Using a combination of skin-care, manual lymph drainage, compression and a customized exercise program, swelling can recede dramatically. Compression Therapy improves the function of the muscle pumps, helps to reduce fibrotic tissue and promotes venous and lymphatic return. Following this, the improvement can be maintained by adhering to some simple guidelines.
